The Long Beach Press-Telegram named Switch Energy Alliance Education Specialist James Corboy a pandemic-era hero for his commitment to excellence in distance learning.
Corboy is a science teacher at Avalon School on Catalina Island, where he has been teaching remotely because Long Beach Unified School District classes have all been online since March. He converted his garage into a lab, so he can engage his students through chemical experiments and building rockets and parachutes.
Corboy has also incorporated Switch Classroom into his curriculum in alignment with Next Generation Science Standards [NGSS] in California.
“I’m high-energy and I’m passionate about science and I also want to entertain them and that’s why I have props,” Corboy said. “I think it is working. You have to be impressed with kids who show up every day on a little screen.”
The Press-Telegram is a print and digital news media company serving the information needs of the Greater Long Beach area for more than 120 years.
