Last week, our Teacher Advisory Council (TAC) gathered in Austin for our annual Summer Institute. It was an extraordinary event filled with collaboration, exploration, and growth. Comprising eleven 5th-12th grade teachers from across the country, the TAC is a group of science education experts who contribute to the development of Switch Classroom—an innovative online learning platform—and provide valuable insights for the success of both teachers and students.
The Summer Institute proved to be an enlightening experience for the TAC members as they embarked on educational development tours to gather knowledge and create informed content for Switch Classroom. They had the privilege of visiting various sites in Austin, where they delved into the depths of geological wonders, expanded their understanding of Earth's history, and witnessed cutting-edge nuclear research.
One of the highlights of the tours was a guided visit to the Austin Core Research Center (CRC), the primary core repository at the University of Texas at Austin. This repository houses an astonishing collection of over 700,000 boxes of donated core and cuttings from wells drilled worldwide. The TAC members explored the geological treasures within the CRC, deepening their understanding of Earth's history and its application to carbon management.
Another fascinating tour took the TAC to the Stoneburner Family Rock Garden, located at the UT Austin Bureau of Economic Geology. This scenic garden showcased 11 massive rock specimens from across Texas, some dating back an astounding 1.3 billion years.
Furthermore, the TAC had the rare opportunity to visit the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory (NETL) Nuclear Reactor at UT Austin. This state-of-the-art facility facilitates advanced research and the application of nuclear technology to solve multidisciplinary problems. Witnessing the power and operation of a nuclear reactor firsthand left the TAC members in awe of the advancements and potential of nuclear research.
Inspired by their eye-opening experiences in Austin, the TAC members utilized their newfound knowledge to create engaging and hands-on activities for Switch Classroom. With a focus on catering to 5th-12th grade students, these activities aim to provide educational yet enjoyable experiences for learners of all backgrounds.
Also during Summer Institute, the TAC members worked closely with our talented web team, combining their insights and expertise to fine-tune and enhance Switch Classroom. The focus was on optimizing usability for both teachers and students, ensuring that the platform offers an exceptional learning experience.
The Summer Institute also included an exclusive Switch Classroom "State-of-the-Union" session, where exciting program and platform updates were unveiled. The TAC members were treated to a glimpse of our incredible advancements on the horizon, showcasing the dedication and hard work of the Switch Classroom team in revolutionizing energy science education.
The TAC's dedication, passion, and tireless efforts in shaping the future of education deserve commendation. Together with the Switch Classroom team, they are redefining the classroom experience. The upcoming activities developed by the TAC members are eagerly anticipated and will soon be available to students worldwide.
As we look ahead, stay tuned for behind-the-scenes glimpses, exciting updates, and the incredible work being done by the TAC to transform energy science education, making learning an adventure and empowering students to explore the fascinating world of science.
