Switch Energy Alliance partnered with the Venezuelan American Petroleum Association (VAPA), Gente Capaz, and CITGO on an international student competition. SEA held its first International Switch Energy Case Competition last fall, but this is the first time SEA has partnered with another organization hosting a case competition.
The Venezuela Energy Solutions for the Future competition presented a case study based on Venezuela, a country with a variety of resources that makes it a perfect laboratory to design and evaluate a diversified energy matrix.
Over 250 university students from 16 countries participated in the case competition. 114 energy professionals from around the world generously volunteered their time as mentors and judges. Six teams were selected to compete in the virtual live finals event on Saturday, May 22nd.
The five finals judges represented different sectors of the energy industry. Lorna Campbell is the former ExxonMobil Exploration and New Ventures Vice President, Temur Akhmedov is the Senior Advisor and Founder of Green Building Council of Uzbekistan, Lorena Moscardelli is the Geoscience Research & Development Leader of the State of Texas Advanced Resource Recovery Program at the Bureau of Economic Geology, Tomás Mata is a Founding Partner of Latam Oil & Gas Corp., and Irene Petkoff is a Sustainable Development and Stakeholder Management Consultant and CEO of Futuro Común.
Team STEP from Venezuela won first place. Team members Carlos Correa, Jesús Pereira, Jozuely Perez, and Oriana Petitjean proposed a solution that included a diversified energy mix of oil, natural gas, biomass, nuclear, geothermal, and hydropower. Their team mentor was Maria B. Soto.
This event is in addition to SEA’s Second Annual International Switch Energy Case Competition, which will be held in Fall 2021. If your organization is interested in partnering with SEA on a case competition, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The full recorded live event is available to watch on the Venezuela Energy Solutions for the Future website.
