Sempra features SIECC program and interns

Sempra, a sponsor of the Switch International Energy Case Competition (SIECC) in 2022, has recently published an article titled "Tackling energy poverty with Switch Energy Alliance." The feature article showcases SIECC - SEA's annual higher education competition that focuses on finding solutions to energy poverty - and the work and insights of SIECC interns, Roopmati Meena and Shruti Prajapati, emphasizing their efforts to address energy poverty and close the gap on global energy access.

Over 770 million people worldwide live without access to electricity, and 2.4 billion people lack clean cooking fuels. The absence of energy access directly affects social issues such as women's rights, healthcare, and education. SEA Chairman, Dr. Scott Tinker, stated, "[SIECC] has given thousands of students from around the world the opportunity to learn about today's energy challenges and develop potential solutions to bring to their own communities." Since its inception in 2020, SIECC has engaged over 2,400 students from 40 countries, encouraging them to think critically about energy poverty and approach it using a multidimensional, data-backed, problem-solving approach.

Roopmati and Shruti, members of the winning SIECC team in 2022, developed a comprehensive solution to address energy poverty. Their proposal included a mix of photovoltaic technology, liquified natural gas, biofuel, and carbon credits to bring reliable and affordable energy to Ghanaian grid lines, families, schools, hospitals, and more.

In the article, Roopmati highlights one of the crucial takeaways from SIECC, stating, "It is not the mere absence or lack of energy but the denied opportunity of access to energy through unreliable, unaffordable, insecure, and polluting energy sources." This perspective emphasizes the complex and multifaceted nature of energy poverty, and how SIECC promotes critical thinking and problem solving.

Roopmati and Shruti continue their involvement with SIECC, exploring diverse scenarios within the energy poverty dynamic. They are developing this year's SIECC case study prompt and assisting with competition logistics. Their dedication and expertise contribute to creating meaningful and thought-provoking challenges for this year's participants.

Registration for the upcoming SIECC opens on September 1 and welcomes participation from students, mentors, and judges. Those interested in joining the competition can stay updated on program details and access additional information on our competition webpage.
